Deep Blue
Mixed media collage. 11th May, 1997 - the last game in the 'Deep Blue Computer Programme' versus Garry Kasparov rematch. This shows the final position in the game which lasted barely an hour. Kasparov made 19 moves. His defeat marked the first time a computer beat a world chess champion in a match of several games. This represents one of the moments in the 20th century when we handed the world over to Artificial Intelligence. Duchamp was more interested in chess than art. He said, " All chess players are artists, but not all artists are chess players." Meanwhile, Mondrian gave the 20th century the severe, pure geometry of a chess board in primary colours.
